Information on the IRS Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN), a 6-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers to help prevent the misuse of their Social Security Number on fraudulent federal income tax returns.
To get your IP PIN please follow the steps below :
1. Create an ID.me account - https://sa.www4.irs.gov/icce-core/loac/ippin/pages/ippin.xhtml
Have these ready before you click the link above:
a. DMV Driver's License or ID
b. Active email address on your iPhone or Android
c. Cellphone must be registered in your name
Note : If you have an existing ID.me account just click Sign in with ID.me button
2. Once inside you irs.gov account, look for the Profile Tab on the upper right corner of the page then
scroll down to the IP PIN, then click Enroll to IP PIN button. Instantly, an IP PIN will be created.
3. Share this IP PIN ONLY to your trusted tax preparer via text so they can e-file your tax returns.
Note : Only taxpayers with previous tax returns filed with the IRS can avail of this online enrollment.
